With the State Fair and the new school year here, memories flood back — once captured on a paper calendar pinned to the bulletin board, then in spiral-bound weekly calendar (still my favorite, pencil only!), and later on desktop electronic calendar.
When we decided to downsize while preserving memories, I organized nearly 35 years of family dates into a single Google Sheet called "Family Important and Fun Dates from Margaret’s Calendars." This simple digital chronicle of our family’s journey, from our children's milestones to the activities and adventures my husband and I now enjoy as empty nesters.
tODAY, THERE IS JUST ONE GOOGLE SHEET ...

Gone are the 20-plus years of paper calendars, scattered electronic files and notes. Today, there is just one Google Sheet with three tabs: "Family," "Trips," and "Properties."
The "Family" sheet records memorable moments for each child — from my firstborn's first full sentence ("Getting my haircut is hard work.") to my youngest son’s high school graduation date, I have a record of their lives growing up at home. The "Trips" sheet chronicles family adventures — from Disney World to the national parks — plus our current empty-nester travels. And the "Properties" tab list the houses we have owned or lived in (I even list the house I lived in as an infant on Orkla Drive in Golden Valley, Minnesota.)
Creating this digital archive was meaningful in itself, and I love that's it's easily updated, referenced and shared in a format my children will appreciate. Google Sheets and Google Drive have become my go-to tool for organizing family items, from important dates to cataloging savings bond gifts by maturity dates.
While I miss my weekly calendar and pencil, and the memories created in our family home, I know exactly where they are to remember them all.
